For IT graduates who want to quickly enter the Australian job market or strengthen their skilled migration prospects, the Professional Year (PY) is not compulsory, but for many it is a practical and effective option.
What is PY / Who is it for?
The ACS Professional Year (IT) is a career-readiness program administered by ACS. It combines internships, classroom training, and online mentoring, designed specifically for international students who have completed an IT-related Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Australia.
It is particularly useful for recent graduates seeking a smooth transition into the Australian workforce.
Why do many students choose PY?
Skills assessment: PY can substitute for one year of relevant work experience for the ACS skills assessment, and allows up to three nominated IT occupations.
Migration points: Completion of PY provides an additional five points towards skilled migration under eligible IT occupations (189/190/491).
Internship placement: Providers arrange internships with local companies, offering real Australian work experience and reference letters.
Professional skills and networking: Training in interview techniques, resume preparation, mentorship, and peer networking provides valuable advantages beyond submitting applications online.
For those aiming to secure a positive skills assessment, gain local work experience, or increase EOI points, PY is a cost-effective pathway.
