[Study Abroad Consultation] "Attention Student Visa Parents!" Analysis of Tuition Fees

Recently, many parents who are currently studying in Australia have consulted our company regarding tuition fees for their children attending primary and secondary schools in Australia. Today, we’ll discuss the tuition fee situations for children whose parents are student visa (subclass 500) holders:

1. Parents Holding a 500 Visa (PhD Students):

  • New South Wales (NSW):

    • If the parent’s primary PhD campus is in NSW, tuition is free.
    • In other cases, tuition is approximately 45% of the full fee.
  • Victoria (VIC), Australian Capital Territory (ACT), Western Australia (WA), Queensland (QLD):
    Free.

  • South Australia (SA):
    Tuition is based on the fixed price listed on the state’s Department of Education website, approximately 50% of the full fee (free for holders of SA government scholarships).

  • Tasmania (TAS):
    Free.

  • Northern Territory (NT):
    Tuition is based on the fixed price listed on the state’s Department of Education website, approximately 60% of the full fee.


2. Parents Holding a 500 Visa (Defence Category):

This type of visa holder is rare, so we won’t go into detail. Apart from WA (unspecified fees) and QLD, the tuition standards for children are consistent with those for PhD visa holders in other states.


3. Parents Holding a 500 Visa (Master by Research):

  • New South Wales (NSW):
    Tuition is based on the fixed price listed on the state’s Department of Education website, approximately 45% of the full fee.

  • Victoria (VIC), Australian Capital Territory (ACT), Tasmania (TAS), Western Australia (WA):
    Free.

  • Queensland (QLD):

    • For research master’s students in regional areas or those with Australian Government scholarships, tuition is free.
    • For research master’s students in non-regional areas, tuition is full fee.
  • South Australia (SA):
    Tuition is based on the fixed price listed on the state’s Department of Education website, approximately 50% of the full fee (free for holders of SA government scholarships).

  • Northern Territory (NT):
    Tuition is based on the fixed price listed on the state’s Department of Education website, approximately 60% of the full fee.


4. Parents Holding a 500 Visa (Bachelor’s and Master’s by Coursework):

  • New South Wales (NSW):
    Tuition is based on the fixed price listed on the state’s Department of Education website, approximately 45% of the full fee.

  • Victoria (VIC), Australian Capital Territory (ACT), Queensland (QLD):
    Full fee (free for holders of Australian Government scholarships).

  • Western Australia (WA):
    Free for master’s students; full fee for bachelor’s students.

  • South Australia (SA):
    Tuition is based on the fixed price listed on the state’s Department of Education website, approximately 50% of the full fee (free for holders of Australian Government scholarships).

  • Tasmania (TAS):
    Tuition is based on the fixed price listed on the state’s Department of Education website, approximately 55% of the full fee.

  • Northern Territory (NT):
    Tuition is based on the fixed price listed on the state’s Department of Education website, approximately 60% of the full fee.


5. Parents Holding a 500 Visa (VET – Vocational Education and Training):

  • New South Wales (NSW):
    Tuition is based on the fixed price listed on the state’s Department of Education website, approximately 70% of the full fee.

  • Victoria (VIC), Australian Capital Territory (ACT), Western Australia (WA):
    Full fee.

  • Queensland (QLD):
    Tuition is based on the fixed price listed on the state’s Department of Education website, approximately 77% of the full fee.

  • South Australia (SA):
    Tuition is based on the fixed price listed on the state’s Department of Education website, approximately 50% of the full fee.

  • Tasmania (TAS):
    Tuition is based on the fixed price listed on the state’s Department of Education website, with the TRP fee being approximately 55% of the full fee.

  • Northern Territory (NT):
    Tuition is based on the fixed price listed on the state’s Department of Education website, approximately 60% of the full fee.


6. Parents Holding a 500 Visa (ELICOS or Non-Award Programs):

Apart from South Australia (SA), which requires children to pay the full fee, the tuition standards in other states are the same as those listed under Point 5 for VET courses.
