Former Elite University Student - Previously Arrested for Public Firearm Incident
Notably, the missing individual has previous media exposure.
In August 2022, Zhou made headlines when arrested for conducting military-style drills in public while wearing camouflage and carrying what appeared to be a firearm. At the time, reports identified him as a postgraduate student at the University of New South Wales on a student visa.
Police reports indicate Zhou was spotted near Royal National Park wearing full camouflage gear, military helmet, and carrying a gel blaster resembling an actual firearm. He allegedly told officers he was "preparing to join the war in Ukraine."
The incident caused significant public alarm, prompting emergency calls.
While authorities confirmed the weapon was non-lethal, Zhou faced multiple charges due to the misleading nature of his actions, including:
Unauthorized possession of imitation firearm
Carrying prohibited weapons in conservation areas
Related firearm offenses
The case received substantial judicial attention. Following a Sutherland Local Court appearance, Zhou underwent mandatory mental health evaluation which diagnosed depression and sleep disorders (but no mental illness) and confirmed he was receiving psychological treatment.
Considering his clean record, treatment compliance, and community support, the court granted bail under strict conditions:
Residence restriction in Kensington
Mandatory weekly police check-ins
Passport surrender
Complete firearm prohibition
The case was adjourned to September 13, 2022 for further hearing.
